Default Mathematica

Mathematica can be downloaded by currently enrolled UT students for use on their personal machines at https://www.ph.utexas.edu/software/.

Default Octave

Jeff,

I'd like to know whether anyone has tried to substitute Octave for the purposes of this class. I've used it before, though not its symbolic package.

Yes, at least one student last year used Octave (as a substitute for Matlab, of course, not Mathematica). I have less than 10 cumulative minutes of experience with Octave in my life, so I can't really comment on its effectiveness.
