Ah, because if the DOF's match, then there is no continuous family of solutions, but there can still be multiple discrete solutions. As in fact there are: all the permutations of ordering of the s's.

Actually, the number of pairs of columns is M(M+1)/2. The way to see this is that there are M(M-1)/2 pairs of distinct columns, plus M cases of pairing a column with itself, giving the stated total....
